Rachel Webster

Like most young children, Rachel’s (she/her) music career began with piano lessons. By the time she reached high school, she knew she wanted to continue her training in music, but was interested in a new instrument. With the guidance of an incredible music teacher, she developed her skills on the clarinet, and chose to pursue music even further by auditioning for Wilfrid Laurier University’s music therapy program.

Throughout her time at WLU, she studied clarinet under the direction of Ross Edwards and Peter Shackleton, as well as played in the WLU Wind Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Jessica Kun. She was given opportunities to learn other instruments as well, such as guitar, bass clarinet, and a variety of percussion instruments. These opportunities were a result of being a music therapy student.

She is passionate about providing an individualized and positive learning environment for her students. This may look like following a curriculum, to picking and choosing elements they want to work on, to just straight up jamming! She firmly believes that music can bring out the best in everyone.

Japhy Sullivan

Japhy Sullivan (She/Her) grew up down a sunny dirt road in the deep dark woods of Eastern Ontario, in a house filled with musical instruments. Her journey, both musically and geographically, has been a scenic one so far. From her early days honing her craft in local fiddle orchestras and family bands, to running a free improvisation collective in Montreal, and to studying traditional Irish ballads and dance music in Cork City. Along the way, Japhy has shared the stage as an accompanist with many pillars of the Canadian folk and root music community: Irish Mythen, David Ross MacDonald, Kate Weekes, Scott Cook, & David Newland to name a few.

Japhy loves fostering community music-making spaces, where musicians of all levels of experience and backgrounds can come together to create amazing music. As a teacher, she strongly believes that it is important to be constantly curious - to not only explore the ‘how’ of ‘how to play music?’, but also the ‘why’ of ‘why is this instrument played this way?’ and that digging into these details will help students discover their own individual approach to playing that serves both their needs and their goals.
